The Translation House Looren library

Our library holds around 5100 books and journals, which you can search using our online catalog. The catalog allows you to search by subject, keyword, title, or author. The Looren library is continually growing, and we are happy to receive tips for further acquisitions if you find that a particular standard work for your language combination is missing.

The library covers the following areas:

  • Monolingual and bilingual or multilingual dictionaries, arranged alphabetically by language
  • Specialist nonfiction and reference works (history, natural sciences, philosophy, etc.)
  • Literary works, with a focus on Swiss literature in all the four national languages (German, French, Italian, and Rhaeto-Romanic)
  • The “Looren Collection,” consisting of books translated or written by our guests (Search> Signatur: SAZ)
  • The “Züst Collection,” consisting of a selection of works published by the Albert Züst house (Search> Signatur: SAL)
  • A special thematic section on translation studies
  • Literary magazines

Use by translators

The library is openly accessible for our guest translators. All books can be taken to your room for work. Simply fill out a “placeholder” card and leave it at the location where the book was shelved.

Public use

Upon application, our numerous dictionaries and encyclopedias can also be used in the library by people from the region. Please call us on +41(0)43-843 12 43 or write to us at info@looren.net if you would like to visit the Looren library. Computer facilities with Internet access can be used in the library.
