Translation House Looren

Since 2005, Translation House Looren in Wernetshausen, in the Swiss canton of Zurich, has been offering professional literary translators from all over the world a place to work and study for a number of weeks at a time. Here at Looren, up to ten guests can devote themselves fully to their project and exchange ideas and experiences with other translators. All language combinations are welcome.

As the first institution of its kind in a country that, with its four national languages, has always been a land of translation, Translation House Looren sees itself primarily as a location for concentrated work. In addition, a program of events aims to increase the visibility of literary translation and support its practitioners. Through readings, workshops, and conferences, we offer translators a forum for continuing professional development and enhance the public’s awareness of their activities.

In the past few years, cooperation with other institutions of literary life in Switzerland and abroad has resulted in a network that supports the exchange of information and knowledge in the area of literary translation, as well as fostering dialogue with all the key players in the literature business.

Translation House Looren is operated by a nonprofit association of the same name, and three-quarters of its funding comes from private resources. Individuals or institutions can support the Translation House through membership of the Association.
