This third in the series of international literary events 4+1 focused on “Alpine language worlds.” The program featured prominent literary figures working in different idioms of the Alpine region, including Walser German, Badiot Dolmitic, and the Ladin dialect Gherdëina.

4+1 is organized by the Swiss foundation for cross-cantonal cooperation ch Stiftung, the Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia, the CTL, and Translation House Looren.

Zeitgenössische Literatur aus Israel: Eine literarische Lesewerkstatt in Hebräisch und Deutsch

Literary translator Anne Birkenhauer, who lives in Jerusalem and translates Hebrew novels and poetry for various publishers, discussed the narrative style and structure of David Grossman’s Isha Borahat MiBesora (To the End of the Land) and Haim Beer’s Lifnei Hamakom with a group of interested readers. She has translated both books into German.

Der Tunnel by Friedrich Dürrenmatt – A dramatized reading in five languages with music

Under the direction of Cyril Tissot, who has worked at many theaters including the Stadttheater Bern, Dürrenmatt’s classic, surreal short story Der Tunnel was brought to life in five different languages by Shirley Anne Hofmann (music) and actors Roberto Betti, Romain Bovy, Benjamin Knobil, and Ueli Locher.

Zweites Schweizer Symposium für literarische Übersetzerinnen und Übersetzer

The theme of this second Swiss symposium for literary translators was the collaboration between translators and editors in Switzerland. The symposium also offered the opportunity for translators to meet and exchange ideas and experiences.

Was gibt’s denn da zu lachen? P.G. Wodehouse: britischer Humor in deutscher Übersetzung

Widely regarded as British literature’s greatest humorist, Pelham Grenville Wodehouse (1881–1975) wrote almost 100 books, creating a world that has lost none of its color today and is now a national cultural treasure. In this third event organized by the Zurich association Weltlesebühne (“world reading stage”), Wodehouse translator Thomas Schlachter talked to the English literature specialist Thomas Hermann about the sparkling wit of Wodehouse’s work and strategies for translating it into German.
