Applying for a subsidy from the Translation House Looren Association

You have the opportunity to apply for a subsidy from the Translation House Looren Association’s support fund. We award CHF 350 per week for up to four weeks. A subsidy can be received once every two years; only one subsidy can be awarded for each project.

If a translator who has received a subsidy in the past applies for support for a new project, we reserve the right to ask for evidence that the previously supported work has now been published.

Starting in 2012, three awards from the support fund are reserved for debut translations.

You can submit your written application for a subsidy at any time. Applications must be received by Translation House Looren at least one month before the beginning of the planned residency. In addition to your application form, please send us the following documents:

  • copy of your publishing contract and license agreement
  • explanation of the importance of your current translation project
  • explanation of your motivation for wishing to stay at Translation House Looren
  • information on any steps you have taken to obtain other funding (we appreciate it if applicants also seek other funding sources)

Please submit your application for a subsidy by email, along with your application for the residency.

We ask all guests whose stay was funded to write a short (one-page) report on their work.

Translating works of Swiss literature

The Swiss Arts Council Pro Helvetia provides financial support to promote the translation of Swiss literature. As a result, applicants who are translating the work of a Swiss author have a greater chance of receiving funding.

Swiss translators

Translators who are Swiss nationals (irrespective of their current place of residence) and translators who have been domiciled in Switzerland for at least two years can also receive support from these funds.

The same conditions apply as for the Translation House Looren Association’s subsidies.

If your stay was supported by Pro Helvetia, as well as the short report we also ask for a text sample at the end of the residency. This will include ten pages of the source text plus your translation.
